Socio-economic project seminar I+II: Business Psychology
Not another meeting! Observing Engagement in Virtual Meetings
At a time when the majority of meetings are virtual or hybrid, the effectiveness of these meetings is under increasing scrutiny. It has been reported that employees often feel overwhelmed by the high number of virtual meetings and often experience them as ineffective and unnecessary. This suggests that meeting engagement is a relevant predictor of meeting effectiveness and exhaustion. While research on virtual meetings focuses primarily on structural and technological aspects (e.g. number of participants, use of cameras), little attention is currently paid to (demonstrably relevant) behavioral aspects and their significance for meeting engagement.
The aim of this project seminar is therefore to develop a deeper understanding of engagement in virtual meetings. This includes understanding which specific behaviors and interaction patterns can be interpreted as signs of engagement, how these are related to other functional behaviors, and what impact they can have on the course and evaluation of the meeting. The focus is on software-supported, systematic behavioral observation. (see accompanying seminar: Methods of Business and Organisational Psychology).
The project will be offered in the summer semester 2024 and the winter semester 2024/25.
